Hawthorn berry is a traditional European heart-and-circulation tonic, and at 300 mg it is tied for the biggest botanical dose in Goliath XL. Its berries and leaves are rich in oligomeric procyanidins and flavonoids, the compounds behind its long use in cardiovascular herbalism.

Hawthorn is one of the better-studied herbs in the formula, but the trials that exist looked at standardised extracts in people already under a doctor’s care for chronic heart failure, at daily doses far above 300 mg — a Cochrane review of 14 such trials found a modest benefit for symptoms in that clinical setting. That is not the same as a circulation claim for a healthy man taking a general men’s blend, and nothing here should be read as a treatment for a heart condition.

Known in traditional Chinese medicine as yin yang huo, epimedium is the most storied botanical in the men’s category and has been used for centuries as a tonic for stamina and drive. Its signature compound is icariin, a prenylated flavonoid.

Icariin is genuinely interesting in the laboratory: isolated 8-isopentenyl flavonoids from Epimedium sagittatum — the exact species named on this label — inhibit the PDE5A enzyme in bioassay work. Two honest caveats belong next to that. Laboratory potency is a fraction of a prescription PDE5 inhibitor’s, and a whole-plant powder at 300 mg is not a standardised icariin extract, so no one should expect a drug-like effect from it.

Damiana is a small aromatic shrub from Mexico and Central America whose leaf has been taken as an aphrodisiac and mood herb for well over a century. It is the third of the four 300 mg botanicals in Goliath XL.

The evidence is preclinical rather than clinical. In a much-cited animal experiment, a Turnera diffusa extract restored copulatory behaviour in sexually exhausted male rats, and a later review of the genus catalogues the flavonoids and terpenoids that may be responsible. Rats are not men, and there is no comparable human trial, so damiana belongs in the “traditional use with early supporting science” column.

Muira puama is an Amazonian shrub whose root and bark earned the nickname “potency wood” in Brazilian folk medicine, where it is brewed as a tonic for energy, nerve tone and drive.

Chemical analysis of Ptychopetalum olacoides has identified the sterols, fatty acids and clerodane diterpenoids in the root, and a 2024 review of Brazilian plants used for male sexual dysfunction places muira puama among the most frequently cited species in that ethnomedicinal tradition. What the literature does not yet contain is a robust randomised human trial, which is why this page describes traditional use rather than proven effect.

Ginkgo is among the oldest surviving tree species on earth and one of the most widely sold herbal extracts in the world. Its leaf supplies flavone glycosides and terpene lactones, and it is traditionally taken for circulation and mental sharpness.

In a controlled study of healthy older adults, a standardised ginkgo extract improved coronary blood flow, an effect the authors traced to endothelium-dependent vasodilation. The caveat is the usual one for a blended capsule: research doses of standardised extract are commonly 120 mg to 240 mg of a defined 24/6 preparation, whereas the 120 mg here is leaf material within a wider formula.

Asian ginseng is the classic adaptogen of Chinese and Korean herbal practice, valued for resilience, stamina and everyday energy. Its active saponins are the ginsenosides.

Ginseng has the strongest human dossier of anything in this bottle where men’s sexual function is concerned: a double-blind crossover trial of Korean red ginseng reported improvement on validated erectile-function scoring, and a later placebo-controlled multicentre study of ginseng berry extract found the same direction of effect. Those trials used gram-level daily doses of specific preparations, not 120 mg of root powder, so treat the research as support for the ingredient class rather than proof for this serving size.

Tribulus is a spiny vine fruit used in Ayurvedic and traditional Chinese wellness, and it is the botanical most often marketed as a natural testosterone booster.

This is the ingredient where an honest page has to push back on the category. A controlled study in young men found that tribulus did not influence androgen production at all, which undercuts the testosterone story that sells it. A separate randomised trial in men with erectile dysfunction found tribulus no better than placebo on its primary outcome. Tribulus is a traditional aphrodisiac with a long history; it is not a demonstrated hormone booster, and Goliath XL should not be bought on that basis.

Catuaba is a Brazilian bark tonic — usually Trichilia catigua or an Erythroxylum species — taken traditionally as a nerve and vitality tonic. Because more than one tree is sold under the name, botanical identity varies between products.

A 2024 review of native Brazilian plants used for male sexual dysfunction places catuaba among the species with the deepest ethnomedicinal record and the thinnest clinical one: encouraging antioxidant and dopamine-related preclinical work, essentially no controlled human data. At 84.5 mg it is plainly a supporting note in this formula, not a headline active.

Saw palmetto is the berry of a North American palm and the best-known botanical in men’s prostate and urinary supplements.

It is also the ingredient with the clearest negative evidence. An updated Cochrane review concluded that saw palmetto probably makes little or no difference to lower urinary tract symptoms compared with placebo, and the JAMA CAMUS trial found no benefit even when the dose was escalated to three times the usual amount. The usual studied dose is 320 mg a day of a standardised lipidosterolic extract; the 84.5 mg of fruit here is well under a quarter of that. Do not buy Goliath XL for prostate support.

Inosine is not a botanical at all — it is a naturally occurring purine nucleoside that sat in sports supplements through the 1990s on the theory that it would support ATP regeneration and oxygen delivery during hard training.

That theory did not survive testing well: the small performance trials run at the time did not support an ergogenic benefit, and inosine has largely disappeared from mainstream sports nutrition since. It is included here at 60 mg, and this page makes no energy claim for it.

Oat straw is the green aerial part of the common oat plant, harvested before the grain ripens, and it has a long folk history as a restorative nervine.

Human research on oat herb extracts is limited and has focused mostly on cognition and mood rather than on male vitality, and the doses used were far above 32 mg. At the amount printed on this label, oat straw is best understood as a traditional inclusion.

Cayenne is the smallest botanical on the panel and the one most people already have in the kitchen. Its pungent principle, capsaicin, is a vasoactive compound with a long association with warmth and circulation.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of red pepper and capsaicin trials found effects on cardiovascular risk factors that were, at best, small — and the intakes studied were dietary rather than a 30 mg pinch inside a capsule. Cayenne is here for its traditional warming role, not as a circulation active.

Vitamin E is the body’s main fat-soluble antioxidant, protecting cell membranes from oxidative damage. The form used here, d-alpha tocopheryl succinate, is the natural stereoisomer rather than the synthetic dl- form, which is the better of the two choices.

At 10 mg this is a nutritional amount, comfortably below the 1,000 mg upper limit set for supplemental alpha-tocopherol in adults. Anyone taking an anticoagulant should note that high-dose vitamin E can increase bleeding risk — not an issue at this dose, but a reason to tell your doctor what you take.

Niacin is a B vitamin the body converts into NAD and NADP, the coenzymes that drive energy-yielding metabolism. It is the one ingredient on this label whose dose is high enough that you may notice it.

Seventy-five milligrams is 469% of the Daily Value. In its nicotinic acid form, niacin commonly causes a temporary flush — reddening, warmth, tingling or itching of the face and upper body — at doses from about 30 mg upward, which is why the tolerable upper intake level for supplemental niacin in adults is 35 mg. The Goliath XL panel prints only “Niacin (Vitamin B3)” without naming the form, so a flush is a realistic possibility with the first few servings. It is uncomfortable rather than dangerous, and it typically fades with continued use.
